Hanukkah
Hi, bigfooters! Today I'm going to talk about one of the happy holidays of December... Hanukkah!
Now, I might not celebrate this holiday, but I can respect other religions like Jewish. Here are some facts about this Jewish holiday from Wikipedia:
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar. It is also known as the Festival of Lights and the Feast of Dedication.
The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a unique candelabrum, the nine-branched menorah or hanukiah, one additional light on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night. The typical menorah consists of eight branches with an additional visually distinct branch. The extra light, with which the others are lit, is called a shamash (Hebrew: שמש, "attendant") and is given a distinct location, usually above or below the rest.[1]
Other Hanukkah festivities include playing dreidel and eating oil-based foods such as doughnuts and latkes! YUM! (:
Cool! I love learning about different holidays! Well, bigfooters, I hope you enjoyed this blog post about Hanukkah, and that you try to answer this question my math teacher gave 7th grade for some extra credit points on a low homework or something:
If the meorah has nine candles that stop burning every night and they add more candles each new day of Hanukkah and all candles burn for eight days, how many candles would the Jews have used by the end of Hanukkah? Submit your answer and find out if you're right! Bye, and Happy Hanukkah! (: (;
